“The reason I love the story so much and keep coming back to it is because I love the opportunity it shows that people have a second chance. There’s so much depression in the world that being able to realize that there is another day and that you can write on a brand-new page tomorrow and that no matter where you’ve been you can turn things around and start over is an important message.”

TIME

Christmas Eve, Long Ago, in Victorian England

A Christmas Carol is one of my favourite plays and a play that I’d wanted to adapt for the stage for over thirty years but I wanted to bring something new to the story and explore some of the themes that Dicken’s touches on. Scrooge is a man who could have had a very different life if he’d made different choices and I really wanted to write a version where we see Scrooge change from the man he was to the miser he became. I also wanted to show that Scrooge isn’t alone in his disdain for Christmas and that there are others like him even though he may be their loudest cheerleader. In the end, Scrooge must humble himself and ask for forgiveness because only by asking for forgiveness can he be redeemed. Please download the script as a PDF and feel free to share it with others because the message of A Christmas Carol is as relevant today as it was when Dickens first wrote it.
